“John was such a star looking after us so well.
Thank you so much for a wonderful experience.”
Roger and Silvia. February 2016.
“I just wanted to thank you again for a wonderful weekend, I hope we can do it again sometime.”
Alan and Jacqueline. February 2016
“We had a great time as we always do in Culebra. It’s always fine margins which adds to the excitement. If we hadn’t happened to be looking in the right direction… or if we had arrived… 30 seconds later… But that’s part of the fun of it.
I hope you keep enjoying your Spanish lives. We appreciate your enthusiasm and your generosity with all that fabulous knowledge you have built up over the years. Its truly inspiring what you do but I’m quite sure its not always sunshine and wolves. We could see the hard work that lies behind it all.”
Colin. March 2016.
“Dear Margaret and John,
Thank you so much for giving us such an amazing experience of life in Sierra de Culebra. We had such a good time…. What we loved was being outdoors in such beautiful and remote surroundings , walking in the hills and valleys and learning what life is like in that area.
We saw some wonderful birds too, and of course the little Iberian hare was an added bonus!”
Ann and Tim. March 2016.
“Now that we are back home and have gathered our thoughts we must congratulate John and yourself on organising such a wonderful experience for us. We really enjoyed all of the spectacular wild life that we saw and the visits to the little villages were very interesting. Being able to sample local foods at lunchtime was very good since it was something that would not have been possible without John’s help. The trip down the Douro gorge was spectacular and, once again the organisation and scheduling of the birds was admirable. The hotel was very well situated for the various observation sites and provided comfortable accommodation and enjoyable dining…
Thank you once again for making our trip so enjoyable and we look forward to seeing you again in the future.”

“Hi Margaret and John
Firstly a very big thank you to John for making our trip to Andujar so memorable. What a stunning area, excellent game viewing and very comfortable accommodation. I can’t believe we were so lucky to see such a variety of birds, mammals and reptiles. We really appreciate John’s expertise and look forward to seeing his photos and videos.”

“Hello Margaret & John
Just wanted to drop you a quick note to say thanks again for a great, action packed holiday!
We really enjoyed it.
Kim & Nick. June 2016.
“Hi John and Margaret,
We had a fantastic time with you, we love returning to real Spain. We were spoilt for birding since it is the quiet time of the year in the UK and from our reckoning we had 107 species. Seeing such an elusive creature as the wolf was quite an honour considering how many hours we spent looking for them – we hope for a rematch at some point in the future!
Have a great season
Wishing you both all the very best”
John and Janet. June 2016.
Thanks for a wonderful week once again – so many wolves – …lots of deer, birds and other wildlife – including my first Iberian Hare – wildlife watching doesn’t get much better than that. Roll on next year – if you’ll have me!
Linda. September 2016.
Thank you again to you and Margaret for your hospitality while I was in the Sierra de la Culebra. I had an excellent time. I enjoyed what I saw but also learnt a tremendous amount by speaking with you and seeing your interactions within the area. It was exactly the trip I wanted to experience with wolves and I hope to make it back sometime to do it again.
Chris. Australia. October 2016.
Many thanks Margaret. We thoroughly enjoyed the trip and appreciated the efforts you both put in to make it a success. Have a good Christmas … and we’ll definitely keep in touch.
Martyn. UK. November 2016.
Thanks once again for all your dedication and hard work, we all had a great time on this trip – we’ll have to sort out a lynx rematch at some point!! Such a wonderful region to visit. We look forward to watching critters with you in the future
All the very best.
John and Janet. UK. April 2017.
“For anyone who longs to really get away to experience nature, exotic wildlife and birds, culture at its oldest and finest, and some of the nicest people in the world, this is the trip to take. My daughter and I were treated to a custom exploration of the land of wolves in Spain, with morning and evening “stakeouts” to try to view wolves, and afternoon adventures to neighboring villages and Portugal. We did see wolves! And we met the local rangers, and learned much about how the Iberian wolf survives alongside humans and livestock in Northern Spain. The sights were beautiful everywhere we went. We have never seen so many enormous birds: bustards, golden eagles, Egyptian vultures, white storks and more. John is an expert birder and naturalist. The local people are welcoming, happy, and loud! The hotel where we stayed was just lovely, and breakfast and dinner were delicious local foods. John and Margaret are the best hosts ever, and we miss them already. ”
Ruth and Story. USA. April 2017.
I found the trip thoroughly enjoyable. It was an authentic experience in terms of wild life viewing…It was also authentic regarding the experience of Spanish life…John’s ability to spot the birds and animals and identify them straight away was incredible….I was thrilled with the storks in the village. No doubt the locals take them for granted, but for me it was the first time. They were so close, their nests so huge, their flight so impressive and their greetings so enchanting. We also enjoyed the excursions in the middle of the day. Hearing the nightingale close to your home and the golden oriole in the Douro gorge were memorable experiences. (We wouldn’t have known what they were if John had not told us). We saw a kite lifting up a snake on the return drive from the Douro. Pine marten, hare and bee eaters were also seen.
A rewarding aspect of the holiday was the fact that we were taken to a remote and sparsely populated region where little English was spoken or understood….Last but not least, there was your own wonderful company. … I have rarely spoken so much at meal times as I found myself among kindred spirits.
Richard. Scotland. May 2017.
Thank you both for a fantastic few days and being such good hosts. Happy wolf watching and I hope to return next September (if not sooner).
Lynn. UK. June 2017.
We had a terrific time watching bears. This tour was certainly watching bears rather than browsing for bears. We are absolutely delighted to have had such a successful tour with you again. Thank you very much.
Once again thanks for a wonderful trip and please share this message with John. He was a great host.
Paul and Zoe. UK. August 2017.
Arrived home safely in one piece. Smooth flight which landed early! …Thank you once again for a wonderful time – two wolves and then eight – life doesn’t get any better than that! I am already suffering from wolf withdrawal. you were right about the journey ( From Culebra to Asturias airport) – it was amazing.
Linda. UK.September 2017.

Hi Margaret and John,
I want to thank you both again for such a magical few days and for your friendship. Hopefully I will be able to come back again next year but if not then I will always be able to visualise the sights and sounds of all the fantastic wildlife I have seen and heard.
Take care of yourselves and I will keep up to date with all your sightings via your Facebook.

Hi Margaret (and John)
Just wanted to say thank you for such a great trip. We loved it all. Johns guiding, the wolf watches, the hotel, the village all were just fabulous. And the wolves….
Thank you again

John & Margaret,

Bill and Joan. UK. September 2018.
Hi John and Margaret,
Just a little email to thank you for making our trip so enjoyable. We never expected so many wolves and there were several other firsts to fascinate us.
Alan and Jacqueline. UK October 2018.
Dear John and Margaret,
A huge thank you once again for a truly memorable week. Hares, otters, vultures, Great Bustards, ad above all those incredible wolves – thrillingly (and at times frustratingly) enigmatic but worth the cold and wet always!
Loved the food, landscape and people and thank you both for your time, patience and knowledge of the area – and for John’s determination to point us in the right direction when we were inevitably looking in the opposite one!
Sarah and Darren. UK November 2018
“Thanks for a great week and for helping to make one of Paula’s dreams come true!”
Alan and Paula. UK March 2019.
I wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed and appreciated both the lynx and wolf tours. It was a pleasure to meet you and Margaret and the long hours watching resulted in some wonderful views of both these elusive mammals. The birds were a bonus, especially the amazing number of great Bustards seen close up and in the distance! Thank you both again for a truly memorable trip.
Glo. New Zealand . April 2019.
I arrived home yesterday afternoon…… Despite the really dreadful weather, it was a memorable and rewarding trip with finally fantastic sightings of 3 Lynx, magical. We loved the area, Rowland’s cooking was amazing, the accommodation great … and Mercedes is such an interesting woman. Our bird list was good as well (although I am not a birder quite like Glo) and the last morning at the river with the dawn chorus which included a cuckoo and a nightingale with the mist fragmented across the hills, sunshine and blue skies and then finding the otter with wonderful sightings ended our trip in a special way.
Sue. Scotland. April 2019.
“ Thank you; it was a great moment! If I come back in the area will contact you for another tour. Thank you!”
Jerome. France. April 2019.
“ Magnifica jornada lobera a junto a uno de los grandes “ maestros” que hay en estos momentos en la Sierra de la Culebra, en cuanto a la observacion de lobos ibericos se refiere, John Hallowell. Estuvo observando lobos durante 29 dias seguidos. Ahi es nada! Ademas de ver varios lobos ese dia, pudimos observer zorros, corzos y ciervos. Manana completa.”
Juan Carlos. Spain. April 2019.
Thanks for the great tour – seeing two wolves just capped off a great day.
Melanie Australia. May 2019.
Hi John & Margaret
Just wanted to drop you a note now that we are back in Blighty to say thank you so much for a wonderful few days with you both.
Seeing the wolves was the highlight, but we also loved our afternoons out with John, spotting birds and other wildlife, and appreciated the time and effort he went to to share his vast knowledge and ensure we saw as much as we could.
We also thoroughly enjoyed the welcome we had from all the staff at the hotel, and at each of our lunch stops.
It gave us a fantastic insight into rural Spain, and the lovely people, and we will treasure the memories forever.
With kind regards
Emma, Mark & Jake xxx

An immersive experience in a land less travelled where the enchanting Iberian wolf roams wild and free.
Sierra de la Culebra is a special place, teeming with wildlife great and small. We came to see wolves and John’s patience and skill led us to a number of unforgettable sightings of these special, illusive animals. We also saw rutting Red deer, Wild boar, 11 species of raptor, Great bustard, Eurasian otter, Iberian water frog, Red fox and the powerful Mastin dogs that guard the livestock. We had expected to see wildlife (though we were surprised and delighted with the sheer amount that we saw) but what we hadn’t anticipated was that we would learn so much about our hosts and the local way of life. We spent almost all day with John and were delighted to be joined by Margaret at dinner time as well. They’ve embraced the local culture, seemingly knowing everyone we encountered, and they told us amazing tales of their experiences and those of the locals with regards to living with wolves (and so much more). The food was fantastic and it was a treat to have John choose wonderful regional breakfasts and lunches for us. Thank you John and Margaret for an absolutely fantastic holiday. We hope to see you again sometime!
